Follow channelTrue Cost of Paying by Card Abroad: Foreign Transaction Fee vs Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)
Enter the amount in local currency, the exchange rate and your card fee, then compare paying in local currency with accepting conversion to your home currency at the till or ATM (DCC). No live rates are built in; you enter the rate you see.
Examples to try only (not any bank's prices): a 2.5% card fee and a 5% DCC markup. Use your card's real fee from its terms or statement, and the DCC rate as shown on the terminal screen.
What is DCC?
When you pay abroad, the terminal or ATM may ask: pay in local currency or in your own? Choosing your own is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): the merchant or terminal operator sets the exchange rate and adds its margin. Visa explains you can always decline it and choose local currency.
How it works
- Local currency: amount × reference rate × (1 + card fee).
- DCC: amount × DCC rate (or reference rate × (1 + markup)) × (1 + card fee if your bank still applies it).
- We show no live rates because a stale number would mislead. Use your bank's or card network's rate on the day.

FAQ
Should I pick my currency or the local one?
Usually local currency is cheaper, because the merchant sets the DCC rate and adds a margin. Enter the numbers you see to check your case.
Where do I get the reference rate?
From your bank app, your card network's rate page, or an official source you trust on the day. We do not put a fixed rate on this page.
Is the 2.5% fee real?
It is only an example. Fees vary by bank and card, and some cards charge none. Read your card's fee schedule.
